GroundUnder Ontario

The ground under Ontario.

Ontario sits in the headwaters of Rocky Fork, the same buried valley ODNR traces east through Mansfield. Near the valley, wells can find coarse sand and gravel; up on the rolling till away from it, water comes from thinner sand and gravel lenses in the drift, typically 5 to 25 gallons per minute, or from the bedrock below.

Western Richland County is Cuyahoga Group country at the bedrock surface: interbedded shales, siltstones and sandstones. ODNR also notes this part of the county sits on high ground near the divide between the Lake Erie and Ohio River basins, so it is headwater country, without big rivers recharging the aquifer from above.

The water

Hardness and iron are common. Homes along the newer roads often have irrigation tied to a well, which makes a properly sized pump and pressure tank matter more.

Q&AOntario questions

Asked around Ontario.

Can my lawn irrigation run off my house well in Ontario?

Often, yes, but only if the well, pump and pressure tank can supply it without running the household out of water. An irrigation zone that demands more than the well can deliver makes the pump run nonstop. B&E sizes irrigation to the well, and services both.

Why does my Ontario well water leave orange stains?

That’s iron. It is dissolved in the groundwater and turns orange-brown when it meets air and bleach. A water test sets the right fix; an iron filter usually beats asking a softener to handle heavy iron.
